G2MAT Lab: From Nuclear Spins to Planetary Evolution

Unraveling atomic origins of geochemical and geophysical processes

The geological processes are often irreversible and therefore, involve transitions among metastable phases. Detailed knowledge of the structural evolution of diverse metastable phases provides insights into the processes involving transitions among metastable phases in natural systems remains to be established. We have established the atomistically-consistent model of structural transitions of diverse earth materials involving geophysical processes, such as seismic slip (Lee et al. Nature Geo. 2017), magama generation, transport, and emplacement (Lee et al. PNAS 2020; PNAS 2011), stable presence of deep mantle melting at the core-mantle boundary (Kim et al. Geophy. Res. Lett. 2019), isotope fractionation (Lee AC Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta. 2020) and impact process in Earth solar system (Lee et al. Geophys. Res. Lett. 2012).
